Grangegorman HUD
Background Information
The Grangegorman Virtual Reality (VR) model was built using a 3D game engine called CryEngine. CryEngine was developed by a company called CryTek. The CryEngine was used to build a First-Person Shooter (FPS) game called Far Cry. The Grangegorman Virtual Reality (VR) model was first modelled in the wide open environment of the Far Cry game. A problem however with the model is that it is unsuitable for people who dont know how to play games so the Grangegorman HUD was created to try an solve this problem.
Aims of the project
The aim of the project was to allow the user to explore Grangegorman and not have the need for a demonstrator. It is much more engaging for the user if they were to interact with the model for themselves. Another aim of the project was to get rid of the First-Person shooter style controls of the game for a more user-friendly control system. An interactive HUD was created to solve this problem and can be used in conjuction with the mouse for control within the VR model.
Technical Information
This HUD was built within the Far Cry game environment. The Lua scripting language was used to code all the functionality of the HUD. The Far Cry game and the Grangegorman VR model is needed to run the HUD files.
Deliverables
The user can now click on the main HUD to select certain options. Some of these options include going to different locations in the Grangegorman campus automatically, playing sound or video files about certain locations and viewing a map of the Grangegorman campus. All these options are available at the click of a button.
